| Fedora Core 6 test 2 pops out of the hat |
Aug. 07, 2006
Red Hat Fedora release engineer Jesse Keating announced the release Aug. 7 of the second test version of Fedora Core 6, which is based on a 2.6.17 kernel and utilizes the GNOME desktop.
The Fedora Core 6 RC 2 is aimed at i386, x86_64, and ppc/ppc64 architectures -- including Intel-based Macintosh computers, Keating said in the release announcement.
"Beware that test releases are recommended only for Linux experts/enthusiasts or for the technology evaluation, as many parts are likely to be broken and the rate of change is rapid," Keating added.
Among the notable features, as listed by Keating, are:- the ability to install packages from additional yum repositories during system install
- introduction of DT_GU_HASH, a far more efficient symbol lookup table for dynamic linking; improves dynamic linking performance by up to 50 percent, Keating claims
- packages built with new build system based on Mock.
- packages now have proper BuildRequires
- functional Java applet plugin for Firefox due to gcjwebplugin
- new default font, DejaVu, replaces Vera.
- 1600+ extras packages available via yum
The Fedora Project is described as "an openly-developed project designed by Red Hat." The project produces time-based releases of Fedora Core two to three times per year, using a public release schedule, it says.
Fedora Core 6 Test 3 is scheduled for release Sept.11, Keating said. Only critical bugs will be fixed after that point, he added.
Those trying out the test releases are asked to submit bug reports here.
