The worldwide trend of government systems embracing Linux is the focus of AP Technology Writer Jim Krane's latest syndicated column . . .

" . . . Linux is now being used by some of the world's largest computer equipment makers: IBM, Hewlett-Packard Co. and Sun Microsystems Inc. Some analysts say the Linux market will continue to grow to the point where the upstart system could eventually be the world's dominant operating system ? even if it never turns out to be the huge cash cow that its Microsoft rival has been."

"Overseas, Linux systems help keep order in Germany's parliament as well as China's post office, France's culture, defense and education ministries and other federal agencies in Europe and Asia. "

"It's an interesting trend and we're seeing a lot of organizations who are very interested in open source software in general and Linux in particular," said Dan Kusnetzky of the technology research firm IDC . . . "
