| Novell announces enterprise desktop security upgrade |
Feb. 16, 2006
Not to be outdone by one of its biggest competitors -- Red Hat Inc. -- Linux desktop maker Novell Inc. announced Thursday at the RSA Security Conference in San Jose, Calif. that it, too, is planning to bolster security for its Linux desktop.
On Wednesday, Red Hat -- which launched the "Security in a Networked World" initiative for Linux/open-source security last August -- announced plans to fortify its enterprise desktop Linux platform in terms of identity management and authentication.
Novell introduced Audit2, a set of new tools for customers to monitor and audit user access and other network events across the enterprise -- a critical requirement in complying with regulations such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, HIPAA, and the Basel II Capital Accord.
Using Audit 2, organizations will have a quick way to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines as well as use real-time monitoring and alerts to track suspicious activity or detect unauthorized changes, Novell said. Customers can now centralize their server event logs for complete cross-platform reporting, in addition to collecting system events from across the enterprise.
Audit2 is available now, the company said.
Novell added that its SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 for IBM eServer has achieved a respected security classification: Controlled Access Protection Profile under the Common Criteria for Information Security Evaluation, known as CAPP/EAL4+.
Red Hat said that its updated new security package, called Red Hat Certificate System, will be available by mid-2006.
As a result of these security improvements, OEMs and distributors of Novell and Red Hat desktops will be able to use the new capabilities to meet compliance requirements in various vertical industries.
