| Linux Mint issues second KDE version test |
Apr. 17, 2007
The Linux Mint team this week made available the second release candidate of its Ubuntu-based Linux Mint 2.2, KDE edition. The release carries a 2.6.17 kernel (same as the most recent GNOME desktop version, which came out a week ago) along with several important improvements, according to the project.
"We received a lot of feedback on BETA 020 and made important modifications in this release," said team member Clement Lefebvre. The stable release is scheduled for April 20, he added.
Foremost among the changes, according to Lefebvre, are:- Dolphin was updated to 0.8 and now features a sidebar
- Default KDE style was changed from Polyester to Domino
- Default theme was changed from zen-green to bianca-green
- Tasty Menu was updated to 0.7.1 (configurable logo and text)
- Krusader and KFTPGrabber are now installed by default
- The panel was rearranged (we received negative feedback on the RSS panel, Lefebvre said)
- System Settings was replaced with KControl
- An important bug on KDE-Guidance was fixed
Upgraded features, Lefebvre added, include:- Default email reader is now Kmail/Kontact
- Koffice 1.6.2 replaces OpenOffice as the default office suite
- Default Web browser now is Firefox 2.0.0.3
- AmaRok upgraded to version 1.4.5
Linux Mint's goal is to provide a more complete out-of-the-box experience by including browser plug-ins, media codecs, support for DVD playback, Java, and other components, the team said on the distro website. It is compatible with Ubuntu software repositories.
The Ubuntu-based distro also offers a pair of GNOME versions: a "full edition," and a "light edition." Unlike the GNOME versions, which fit on live/install CDs, the new KDE version, at 809 MB size, requires the added space of a DVD optical disc.
You can download the DVD ISO image from the main Linux Mint site here. Alternatively, you can link directly to the ISO image file (809MB) here.
