Dec. 15, 2005
The PCLinuxOS development team has announced that PCLinuxOS 0.92 is now available for download. PCLinuxOS, a relatively new distribution (less than a year old), is an English-only Mandrake (now Mandriva) Linux derivative.
Data on the CD is uncompressed on the fly, allowing up to 2GB of programs on one CD that includes a complete X server, KDE 3.4.3 desktop, OpenOffice.org 2.0, and other ready-to-use applications, the team said.
In addition to running it from the live CD, PCLinuxOS can also be installed onto a hard drive by means of an easy-to-use livecd-installer, according to the team. Additional applications can be added or removed from the hard drive using a friendly apt-get front end via Synaptic, the team added.
Version 0.92 -- still considered a beta -- features an updated 2.6.12 kernel, the project said. The hotplug has been moved to udev to provide faster boot times, it added.
Mklivecd boasts many improvements, such as preloading sata modules. Hwdetect has been reworked and provides many new routines for hardware detection. The livecd installer has also been updated, the project said.
Usbkey support has been enhanced with an updated configuration utility and bootup discovery, accordig to the project.
