Open Clip Art Library swells to 6,900 SVG images, plans image converters
Oct. 17, 2005

Release 0.18 of Open Clip Art Library, containing over 6,900 scalable vector graphics (SVG) files created by more than 500 artists, is now available for download and use, project developer Jon Phillips said Monday. The Open Clip Art Library is a cooperative effort between artists and users.

For the month of September, the Library sought imagery related to pets, including images of different breeds appropriate for use by animal shelters, Phillips said.

"For the upcoming 0.19 release, due Nov. 1, 2005, the theme is Halloween," Phillips said. "This is any artist's chance to submit to the Open Clip Art Library images of ghosts and goblins, bats, witches, and pumpkins."

The community would also welcome printable templates for creating holiday decorations usable in Inkscape, OpenOffice, Scribus, and other graphics applications, Phillips said.

"SVG is the mother format," Phillips told DesktopLinux.com. "We are going to provide converters to the other formats." He did not give a timeline on that development.

Some of the highlights from this latest release, according to the project, include:
  • New top level categories "science" and "electronics"
  • New subsections "religion," "astronomy," "network," and others
  • Flags collection has been fleshed out/improved
  • Additional new signs/symbols
  • Lots of new vehicles, office, sports, music, and toys clipart
A lot of the previously "unsorted" art is now sorted and moved into other categories, and several duplicates removed, Phillips said. "While much more work is required before the collection is perfect, this release refines the collection for easier access," he added.

Users may download artwork directly from this site. Or, users can find one of the other packages here.

The Open Clip Art Library aims to create an archive of user contributed clip art that may be freely used. All graphics submitted to the project are placed into the public domain, according to the Creative Commons Public Domain Declaration.
