| LPI adds open-source job placement service |
Aug. 17, 2006
For years, the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) has offered the most important basic Linux worker certification, the LPIC. On August 16 at LinuxWorld in San Francisco, the organization launched a new employment and contract matching service for open-source workers who are registered on LPI's internal exam candidate database.
The new program will match qualified open-source workers with employers and contract opportunities. Although the program will focus on LPI-certified Linux professionals it also welcomes other system and network administrators to register, obtain an LPI ID number, and provide their skills profile for this matching service. The program will be piloted in North America, Latin America, China, India, and Germany.
According to Jim Lacey, the LPI's president and CEO, the program came about due to overwhelming demand from Fortune 100 IT companies from around the world. "LPI is recognized globally as having highly qualified, skilled and accredited IT professionals. Our certification program is respected for its dedication to skills development and professionalism as opposed to being a tool to sell software and training services," Lacey said, in a statement.
Lacey also said this is the first skills databank of its kind devoted just to open-source professionals. Lacey announced the program at a special LPIC Alumni reception at LinuxWorld, sponsored by Prosoft Training and Thomson Prometric.
Resellers at LinuxWorld's special channel event said they liked the idea of the program. One Midwestern system integrator said, "Getting properly trained Linux workers has been a real problem for us. Anything that will help us identify and contact qualified people would be welcome."
Open Source professionals and existing LPI candidates may participate in this voluntary program by "opting-in" through a series of questions provided on the LPI exam registration system, the LPI said. Enterprise customers, HR recruiters, and others providing contract opportunities are asked to contact Glenn McKnight, the LPI's director of operations, for employment or contract listing pricing details, and for additional information about the program.
