| Xen-loving rPath revs up |
Dec. 11, 2006
Version 1.0.5 of rPath Linux has been released and is available for download, project team member Michael K. Johnson announced last week. The new version of the Xen-oriented distribution features a 2.6.17.14 kernel along with the GNOME desktop environment.
"rPath Linux [formerly Specifix Linux], the first distribution built using the Conary software management system, has new fixes for certain installation methods and all package updates released as of Nov. 22," Johnson said in the release announcement.
rPath, which supports x86 and x86_64 machines, is described as "a reference platform for the creation of software appliances or purpose-built distributions." It is meant to be used as part of a Xen virtualization software stack. As a result, developers can configure a Conary-based software appliance as a Xen Dom0 or DomU, the project team said.
However, it is also a Linux distribution in its own right, according to the team.
"The Xen Dom0 images have been enhanced with several additional packages for various file systems and LVM support," Johnson added.
Key features included in rPath Linux, as listed by the project team, are:- Open Office.org 2.0.1 office suite
- Firefox 1.5.0.8 browser
- GAIM 1.5.0 messenger
- GIMP 2.2.8 graphics editor
- SendMail 8.13.7 mail transport agent
rPath is a customized Linux that aims to make it easy for ISVs (independent software vendors) to create their own ready-to-deploy software appliances, according to the project. "If you're looking for more than creating turnkey Linux appliances or servers, rPath has you covered," DesktopLinux.com editor Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols observed last August.
