How far will open-source software reaches into desktop space? A maker electric guitars and strings has gone Microsoft-free with a touted US $80K. German insurer Debeka began using an open-source package from SuSE to set up workstations for 3,000 employees in 230 offices. Brazil, Peru and Australia are looking first to open-source systems to meet government technology needs. China is promoting the use of Linux and open source to nurture a domestic software industry. And the list of businesses, governments, and academic institutions eyeing open source Linux keeps growing according to this report Byron Acohido for USAToday.
IDC estimated that "open-source desktop software pulled even last year with Apple Computer desktop software, with an estimated 3% market share, up from 2.4% in 2001."
Factors fostering the move to open source include enhanced security, software quality, and even Microsoft's controversial licensing plan -- among many reasons.
