| Integrated Thunderbird calendar takes flight |
Mar. 21, 2006
Mozilla's Calendar team Monday released Lightning 0.1, a new calendar extension for Thunderbird 1.5 email client users who run Linux, Mac OS X, or Windows. "This is a major milestone on the road to an integrated calendar for users of Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5," wrote team spokesman Simon Paquet on the Mozillazine site.
The Lightning Project, a redesign of the Thunderbird Calendar component, is aimed at tightly integrating calendar functionality (scheduling, tasks, address book, etc.) into the email client. An outline of the key features of the Lightening calendar component is available here.
Although a number of improvements are already incorporated into this initial release, Paquet said, the team's goals to be implemented in future iterations include:- Improved Thunderbird integration, such as email-task linkage and better iMIP support (meeting invitations)
- Improved CalDAV support. CalDAV is a protocol allowing calendar access via WebDAV. CalDAV models calendar events as HTTP resources in iCalendar format and models calendars containing events as WebDAV collections. This allows users to publish and subscribe to calendars, share them collaboratively, synchronize between multiple users and synchronize between multiple devices.
- Cached calendar support for offline calendar use
- Device synchronization
