VMware announces beta of VMware Workstation 3.0
Sep. 04, 2001

Palo Alto, CA -- (press release excerpt) -- VMware, Inc. today announced the availability of a Beta release of VMware Workstation 3.0, the latest generation of its award-winning desktop software for technical professionals. Workstation 3.0 delivers significant performance and usability improvements over previous releases, dramatically expanding the utility and value of virtualization software for desktop computers. VMware Workstation 3.0 Beta is immediately available for download, here.

"Workstation 3.0 is our most powerful and comprehensive desktop software release ever," said Diane Greene, co-founder, president and CEO of VMware. "It's faster, easier to use and supports a wide range of peripheral devices. The result of 2-1/2 years of experience with hundreds of thousands of users, Workstation 3.0 is a compelling, must-have product for power developers and other technical professionals."

"VMware launched the innovative and technically outstanding Workstation desktop virtualization software at DEMO 99," said Chris Shipley, executive producer of The DEMO Conferences and publisher of the #1-rated technology newsletter, DEMOletter. "That product was embraced by developer communities because it provided a robust and convenient platform. The software has only improved, and today is one of the most effective ways for both developers and enterprise customers to leverage hardware and software expenditures."

VMware Workstation enables multiple operating systems to run on physical computers in secure, transportable, high-performance virtual computers. As a result, technical professionals spend more time being productive and less time configuring hardware, installing software, rebooting, or reconfiguring systems.

Workstation 3.0 provides support for the latest operating systems including Microsoft Windows XP and the latest Linux distributions, supports additional peripheral devices, and provides significant enhancements in networking and better overall performance. On Microsoft Windows host operating systems, Workstation 3.0 provides a completely new Windows-style user interface with significantly improved ease of use.

VMware will ship Workstation 3.0 in the fourth quarter of 2001. Details on pricing and exact availability will be made available soon.
