Wyse notes 80% growth of Linux thin-client market, unveils new devices

Wyse Technology announced a pair of Linux-based thin-client terminals today, which the company said will "address the rapidly expanding Linux thin-client market . . . and allow [it] to maintain its dominance of the worldwide thin-client market." Data from market research firm IDC indicates that the worldwide Linux thin-client market grew more than 80% in 2002, Wyse said.
"As a growing number of our customers demand open source applications, we have increased their thin-client options," David Rand, director of corporate marketing at Wyse." Our new Linux thin clients provide us with new market opportunities and will help us maintain our impressive growth."
According to Wyse, the $399 Winterm 5125SE and $499 5455XL offer a choice of a low-end terminal limited to server-based applications, and a high-end Java-enabled platform that can run local applications, respectively.
The Winterm 5125XE includes 32MB Flash and 64MB RAM memory, provides USB and "legacy I/O ports," and support X-Windows, Linux, and UNIX software environments, and can be mounted on a wall or under a desk to fit into tight spaces. The 5455XL comes with 64MB Flash and 128MB RAM memory, and includes Java for local application execution. Both Linux-based thin clients include Wyse's "Rapport" thin client management software, and both models are also available in custom configurations with various peripheral options, including CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, additional RAM, and wireless Wi-Fi 802.11b, Wyse said.
