| Open Clip Art project adds images, touts progress |
Jul. 12, 2005
The Open Clip Art Library project has released version 0.15 of its package of over 4000 images from over 400 artists world-wide. According to the project's announcement, "the amount of high quality clip art has increased much with the inclusion of Nicu Buculei's Playing Cards collection and Gerald Ganson's package submission."
Thanks to Google's Summer of Code, student developer Greg Steffensen received funding during the month of June to create a graphical client for the Open Clip Art Library. The client will be usable from within Inkscape and other applications on the free desktop. The new graphical client also benefits from the project's new document management system (DMS), and will make use of its SOAP-based webservice API to communicate with the Open Clip Art Library.
Library developers Bryce Harrington and Jon Phillips are scheduled to present at the Desktop Developers' Conference 2005 in Ottawa, Canada July 18-19. Harrington's presentation is titled, "Inkscape -- An Open Source Vector Drawing Application," and Phillips will present an "Introduction to the Open Clip Art Library," a talk which will also be given at SVG Open 2005 in Enschede, the Netherlands.
During July, the project will continue to collect summer-themed clip art, while the developer focus will be on integrating and testing DMS with openclipart.org's internals, the project said.
The project encourages submissions to its clip art library, as well as participation in building the Clip Art Library infrastructure. All graphics submitted to the project are released under the Creative Commons Public Domain Declaration, according to the project.
