"New generation" GoblinX Premium 2007.1 debuts
Apr. 06, 2007

GoblinX Premium 2007.1, a bootable live CD distribution based on Slackware Linux, was made available this week by its Brazil-based project team. It is the first release of an "new generation of the distribution, full of news, special features, and upgrades," according to the team.

The primary goal of GoblinX, which currently boasts a 2.6.28 kernel and a default Xfce desktop, is to create a "more pleasant and functional desktop, standardizing all icons and themes to make it easy for novice users to learn about available applications," the team says on its website.

The live CD system has been upgraded in the following manner, according to the team:
  • now uses AuFS instead of UnionFS, which "brings more stability and fewer bugs to the system"
  • upgraded kernel to 2.6.18
  • SquashFS and Linux Live upgraded
  • a dozen new GUIs were added to help the user, including Software Master, a software manager to use with modules and packages in the job of installing, upgrading and rebuilding
  • downloader gtkImods upgraded
  • Media Manager, a series of small applications and scripts that help users mount and access devices such as USB drives, DVDs, and CDs
Other applications that have been upgraded include Liveupgrade, GoblinX Installer, and The Magic Center -- which now works also with Xfce Desktop.

Standard GoblinX features include:
  • GNOME Office suite
  • GAIM 1.5.0 messenger
  • GIMP 2.2.10 graphics editor
  • Mplayer 1.0pre7try2 media player
  • Firefox 1.5 browser
Another new feature in Premium 2007.1 is that all packages can now be downloaded and upgraded with dependencies by using Slapt-get; GoblinX also has its own package repository. The release also includes several important upgrades, more libraries, more applications for Internet and multimedia uses, the team said.

You can obtain GoblinX Premium 2007.1 on a live CD here, for $10. The team said that $5.40 from each GoblinX Premium disc shipped is given to support the continued development of GoblinX.

You can download the free version of GoblinX Standard in the form of a 317MB ISO image here.
