Berry Linux 0.80, a Fedora-based live CD for the desktop with support for the Japanese and English languages, was released this week by its Japan-based project team. The distribution incorporates a 2.6.20.7 kernel and includes a default KDE desktop and support for 3D desktop effects with AIGLX and Beryl 0.2.0, the team said.
Berry Linux 0.80 uses Fedora's Kudzu 1.2.67 and Klaus Knopper's hwdata 0.199 scripts for i386 hardware detection, features symmetric multiprocessing support, and includes ndev/udev and bootsplash patches, team member Yuichiro Nakada said in the release announcement.
Among new application changes, Nakada said, Berry Linux ships with:- X.Org 7.1 window manager
- Japanese and English editions of OpenOffice.org 2.2.0
- Firefox 1.5.0.11 browser
- Sylpheed 2.3.1 email client
Package upgrades include xine with xine-lib 1.1.5 and WINE 0.9.32.
Standard features, according to the project website, include:- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 email client
- Perl 5.8.8 development platform
- Vim 7.0 text editor
Berry Linux is a bootable CD Linux with automatic hardware detection and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals.
Berry Linux is based on Red Hat Linux and Knoppix, according to the project's website. It can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, or rescue system. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk, although this option is also available (in which case it needs 1.2GB of hard disk space).
