| Asian Linux companies join forces to advance Debian Linux |
Mar. 01, 2005
VA Linux and Sun Wah Linux Ltd. (SWL) are jointly developing a "universal Debian GNU/Linux infrastructure" in an effort to promote the adoption of Debian-based Linux in Japan and China. The collaboration combines VA Linux's Linux kernel expertise with SWL's "rich experience" in desktop applications and internationalization (I18N) techniques, especially with respect to Asian languages, according to the companies.
The companies say their combined core competencies and "strong dedication to Debian development [will] assure a steep rise in the presence of Debian GNU/Linux in the global market," and that they will cooperate to promote the adoption of Debian-based systems in both Japan and China, particularly in the telecommunications and enterprise sectors in Japan and government and public arenas in China.
VA Linux says it employs six Debian developers, including Simon Horman, a key contributor to the UltraMonkey load-balancer and to the Debian kernel, and Takuo Kitame, an active developer of GNOME and Mozilla-related technologies. SWL counts two Debian developers among its crew, including Roger So, an I18N specialist and a member of the OpenI18N steering committee.
China-based Sun Wah Linux Limited is an open-source software developer and a provider of Linux-based systems. VA Linux Systems Japan K.K. (VA Linux) is a provider of Linux-based software in the Japanese domestic market, particularly in the telecommunication and enterprise segments.
