| Fedora 7 test 3 ready for download |
Mar. 30, 2007
The Fedora project this week announced the availability of the third of four development releases of Fedora 7, which can be deployed as either GNOME- or KDE-based live CDs or installed to a hard drive.
A key improvement in Fedora 7 is that the old Fedora Core and Fedora Extras software repositories have now been merged. This results in a shared infrastructure and a single repository of packages to which everyone is invited to contribute, spokesperson Jeremy Katz said. The combined software repository contains thousands of additional packages that users may add at installation time, or later.
This third test release features a 2.6.21 Linux kernel. Other significant changes in this version include a new Echo icon theme, and fast user switching, the project team said.
Standard features, as listed by the project team, include:- Firefox 2.0.0.3 browser
- GAIM 2.0.0 instant messenger
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 email client
Fedora (formerly Fedora Core) is a community-based -- but Red Hat-controlled -- distribution that forms the technology basis for Red Hat's commercial distribution, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). While Fedora is primarily developed by Red Hat's engineers, the project also welcomes the participation of outside developers. The project strives to be a cutting-edge distribution, issuing new releases two to three times a year.
Fedora 7 test 3 is available for download in a variety of editions. Live CD/DVD editions with a limited set of packages are now available for both i386 (in GNOME and KDE variants) and x86_64-bit (GNOME only). A "prime spin" is also available in desktop/development and workstation/server versions, the project team said.
ISO images are also available for DVDs that contain a more comprehensive set of packages for installation to a hard drive. Note that the version on the download images is "6.92" rather than 7.xx:Screen shots can be viewed here, courtesy of LinuxQuestions.org.
