Softmaker has fully released its Microsoft Windows-compatible office suite that runs on the Linux operating system. The German software maker's SoftMaker Office 2004 includes Textmaker for word processing, and Planmaker, a spreadsheet program.
Softmaker says that it ported all components of SoftMaker Office to Linux over the past two years, and that it provided Linux users with public betas as each component became available.
Textmaker is compatible with Microsoft Word 6/95/97/2000/XP files and includes multiple language support, according to Softmaker. The program and its dictionaries and thesauri are available in a wide range of European languages. The spreadsheet program is claimed to be a replacement for Microsoft Excel, providing more than than 320 calculation functions and allowing users to create high-quality Excel-compatible charts.
Future plans for Softmaker Office include DataMaker database, and a document management system that also hosts groupware functions, according to Softmaker.
The software is available from the company's website and is priced at US $69.95, EUR 69.95. The company's office products are also available for Windows desktops, as well as for for Sharp's Linux-powered Zaurus PDAs, and handhelds based on Microsoft's Pocket PC and Windows CE OSes.
