Shuttleworth OK with "Evil Edgy"
Jan. 24, 2007

The U.K.-based team that released the "Satanic" version of Ubuntu last December -- nicknamed "Evil Edgy" -- earlier this month added a KDE-based Kubuntu version. Ubuntu or Kubuntu Satanic Edition can be installed over any Ubuntu Edgy variant, the team said.

It's not a surprise that such a distro built upon Ubuntu/Kubuntu eventually would be released in response to the release last year of Christian Ubuntu.

"GNOME users have been enjoying the fiery-themed darkness of the Satanic Edition since December the 13th. Now Satan has spread his wings to cast a foreboding shadow over the KDE desktop," the project team said in the release announcement.

Ubuntu/Kubuntu founder and chief executive Mark Shuttleworth, answering a query from DesktopLinux.com, was philosophical in his response.

"Ubuntu is a broad church!" Shuttleworth wrote in an email. "We manage to keep both GNOME and KDE folks happy and collaborating constructively, so this should be no trouble at all."

"Our guiding rules are enshrined in the Ubuntu Code of Conduct, and as long as all sides are following that, there's no problem with derivatives that are focused on such diverse user bases," the Ubuntu founder added.

Availability

"Ubuntu/Kubuntu SE is not currently a distro, it's more a series of themes to transform the look of Ubuntu," the team explained. "You must first download and install one of the standard Ubuntu variants and then upgrade to Ubuntu SE. Don't worry; you can easily change your system back if you intend to recant."

You can download Satanic Ubuntu ("Evil Edgy") here. Satanic Kubuntu can be downloaded here.

Note: Kubuntu SE is stored in a secure APT repository, so you'll need to download the key before installation. You can find the instructions to download the key here.

You can view some screen shots of the Satanic distros, here and here.
