Linux gains backup utility
Aug. 20, 2008

Memopal announced a free trial download of a Linux version of its online backup utility. The public beta of Memopal supports Ubuntu 8.04 and Debian Etch, says the company, which says it may release an open source version in the future.

Memopal offers "automatic and continuous" backup to a remote server via a secure internet connection, says the company. Its Memopal Global File System (MGFS) archiving technology is said to offer a distributed file system that supports up to 100 million terabytes of online storage, hot-add scalability, and transparent read-write compression, among other features. MGFS is said to improve compression by exploiting "similarities between user data."

The Memopal utility performs file backup and restore operations in real time, enabling archival from several computers onto a single account, says the company. Pricing for the service is said to cost less than $0.33 US per GB per year.

Stated Marco Trombetti, CEO of Rome, Italy-based Memopal, "Our goal is to make Online Backup available to anyone, regardless of which operating system, device, or language they use. We are thus not ruling out a future release of an Open Source solution or an API."

The free trial download of the public beta of Memopal for Ubuntu and Debian Linux is available now, here. Packages are available for Ubuntu 8.04 386, Ubuntu 8.04 amd64, Debian Etch 386, and Debian Etch amd64. In addition, Memopal has set up a small beta-testing community for the project, here.
