In this interview at ZDNet UK, Linux Kernel hacker Alan Cox explains why the world needs open source software on the desktop and why Linux was perfect for Iceland. Quoting from the interview . . .
"Q: Bob Young said in an interview recently that he doesn't see Linux becoming a mainstream desktop operating system, but will control things from behind the scenes by taking over the Internet. What's your view on desktop Linux?"
"A: Last week I was talking to somebody who was looking to replace 20,000 desktops with Linux. That's not by any standard unique. What's happening at the moment is that people who are looking at it tend to have a very definite application set, and they're looking at it as a case of, I can kit out one office with Windows, or I can kit out vast numbers of systems with Linux, with StarOffice. If you want a staff licence for a huge company with support, you're still looking at £100,000 maybe, at most, and that's first-class support. So the difference between that and the Windows world is astronomical . . ."
