Why Photoshop tops most-wanted Linux app list |
Feb. 03, 2006
When Novell recently reported early results from its survey of what applications people wanted ported to Linux, a lot of people were surprised to see the venerable graphics program, Adobe Photoshop, top the list, especially given the availability of GIMP. DesktopLinux.com columnist Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols was among those surprised.
"Quicken, my own favorite, QuickBooks, Dreamweaver -- sure. But Photoshop -- when we already have GIMP?" Vaughan-Nichols writes.
"GIMP, in case you don't know, has long been considered one of the Linux desktop's success stories. For example, it's been described as offering, "a level of functionality comparable to Photoshop for free" in LinuxPlanet -- back in the year 2000," he continues.
What's going on here?
Vaughan-Nichols did some research and discovered several excellent reasons why Photoshop made the top of the list. Read his entire column to find out what they are.
