| Third beta of Mandriva Linux 2007 arrives |
Aug. 31, 2006
The third beta version of Mandriva Linux 2007 was released Aug. 31, only 15 days after the distro's second beta came out for testing/bug reporting. The new beta is based on a 2.6.17 Linux kernel, and comes with a choice of either the KDE 3.5.4 or GNOME 2.16 RC1 desktops.
Mandriva has a tendency to give users a large range of software options. For example, you can select from among GNOME Office, KOffice, or OpenOffice.org for a business suite; or between Evolution and Thunderbird for an email client.
Some of the key improvements since beta 2, according to the France-based project team, include: - new 3D desktop support (both with AIGLX and Xgl) and a new tool to configure it (drak3d)
- New 'One' CD with 3D desktop support (AIGLX and Xgl, both on KDE and GNOME, autodetection of the best 3D solution)
- Kernel 2.6.17 (based on 2.6.17.8 with ALSA 1.0.12 rc2)
- New VPN configuration tool (drakvpn)
- New firewall
A full range of live and installation CD and DVD isos, for i586 and x86_64 architectures, is available for download from the Mandriva mirrors. The dual-arch installation DVD (4.4GB) is available here.
