The 12-chapter, 640-page volume touches on the basic facets of running Linux on a PC -- setting up email and connectivity, document file/print, etc. -- and walks the reader through running the Linux liveCD. The appendices provide a technical overview of more advanced topics, including BIOS, device drivers, using the command line, and disk partitioning.
Author van der Linden was motivated to write Guide to Linux due to the "unhappy experiences of a family member whose Windows PC was completely taken over by outside hackers," according to the book's publisher. Before writing this book, the author reportedly spent a year volunteering on Linux user forums, helping new users master Linux, and researching solutions for typical problems.
Van der Linden, who wrote Just Java 2 (2004) and Expert C Programming (1994), also touches on the lighter side of Linux. For example, he includes a description of how the proprietary Xbox games PC was improved to run Linux, which thus provided Microsoft-subsidized hardware to all, the publisher said.
