Aug. 07, 2007
SAN FRANCISCO -- On Aug. 7 at LinuxWorld in San Francisco, Dell and Canonical announced that Dell would start selling Ubuntu-powered consumer PCs in Europe on Aug. 8.
Michael Dell has promised that Ubuntu Linux PCs would arrive in Europe after customers demanded it following Dell's successful introduction of pre-installed Ubuntu systems in the United States. On Dell's IdeaStorm customer feedback Web site, more than 41,000 would-be desktop users requested Ubuntu-powered PCs be sold worldwide.
Specifically, Dell is introducing two computers: the Inspiron 6400n desktop and the Inspiron 530n with Ubuntu 7.04. These PCs will be available in the UK, France and Germany. In England, the Inspiron 6400n desktop computer will cost £329 and the Inspiron 530n notebook will cost £399.
The systems come with the full Ubuntu 7.04 distribution. This includes the OpenOffice office suite Evolution e-mail and the Firefox browser.
For support, Dell will be offering its usual support options. Advanced upgrade services and support can be purchased directly from Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu.
