| UK eyes Linux desktop for government agencies with IBM pilot program |

ZDNet UK reports that the British government and IBM are examining the value proposition of Linux for deployment in UK government agencies. Nine Linux test programs are said to be underway to in an effort to see how much money government agencies can save by switching to open-source software. Given the go-ahead just last year by the UK's Office of Government Commerce (OPG), the procurement and standards arm of the British government, some agencies are already using Linux in their offices, according to the article.
Adam Jollans, Linux strategy manager at IBM likens the move to the German government's pilot programs with Linux that led to full deployments throughout Germany's state agencies within two years. "The desktop conversation is definitely happening," Jollans said.
