Mar. 22, 2004
Massachusetts is sponsoring a program, the Government Open Code Collaborative (GOCC) that gives the public sector access to open-source software. With the unveiling of a software repository last week, the GOCC announced that they will allow participating state governments to contribute and download open source and proprietary software designed by government agencies.
The repository, hosted at the University of Rhode Island, will feature software including MySQL database, Apache Web server, OpenLDAP, and Debian Linux, among those titles available.
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Utah; the cities of Gloucester and Wooster in Massachusetts; along with Harvard and MIT have all signed a cooperative agreement to take part in the program. Other states are expected to announce participation in coming months.
InformationWeek offers more details about the program from the group's organizers at the Open Source in Government Conference, held at George Washington University.
