| Kurumin Linux rolls out lightweight live CD |
Sep. 25, 2006
The Kurumin Linux project, which produces a Knoppix-based distribution, released a stripped-down, live CD edition of Kurumin Linux 6.1 on Sept. 24. It features a 2.6.17.6 kernel and the KDE desktop. Key features include excellent hardware auto-detection, support for Brazilian Portuguese, and small size, according to the team.
The Kurumin project, based in Brazil, started in 2003 as a 200MB bootable CD, but has since expanded to include OpenOffice.org, Java, and many other popular applications, a team spokesman said.
"We are returning to our roots with 'Kurumin Light,'" the team said.
Besides eliminating some of the larger software packages, as well as dropping support for scanners and 3D accelerated graphics cards, the 182MB live CD has been optimized for fast booting and reduced memory consumption. As such, this new edition fits on any mini-CD and 256MB USB storage device, and it can also serve as a quick hard-disk installation media.
Key standard features, according to the project team, include:- OpenOffice.org 2.0.3; also supports KOffice
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- GAIM 1.5.1cvs messenger
- amaroK 1.4.0 music player
- Firefox 1.5.0.6 browser
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 email client
