New server-based office suite offers MS Office compatibility

Cupertino, CA -- (press release excerpt) -- ThinkFree Corporation today unveiled ThinkFree Office 2.0, the latest release of its server-based office productivity suite, featuring Microsoft Office compatible word-processing, spreadsheet, and presentation graphics programs. Written from the ground-up in Java, ThinkFree 2.0 provides increased ease-of-use and enhanced Internet collaboration functionality to further ThinkFree's strategy of making computing possible from any Internet-connected device with any operating system, anytime, anywhere.

ThinkFree Office 2.0 runs on any platform, including Linux, UNIX, Windows, and Macintosh. The product suite is accessible and fully functional online and offline via both dial-up and broadband connections. The ThinkFree Office family of applications includes:
  • Write, a WYSIWYG Microsoft Word compatible word processor/HTML editor,
  • Calc, a Microsoft Excel compatible spreadsheet,
  • Show, a Microsoft PowerPoint compatible presentation graphics program,
  • Secure, online storage via the ThinkFree Cyberdrive
  • Folders, a file manager like Microsoft Windows Explorer for navigating and managing, documents locally or in the secure ThinkFree Cyberdrive.
With ThinkFree Office 2.0, users can share and collaborate on documents via the creation and use of a public folder to which friends and colleagues can connect. In addition, ThinkFree Office 2.0 provides greater ease-of-use and seamless compatibility with the latest versions of Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Office XP. Other ThinkFree Office 2.0 enhancements include:
  • Support for 100% of the locally available system fonts
  • Support for webDAV drive access (third-party Internet based file storage)
  • Support for animation in Show and PowerPoint documents
  • Enhanced font and graphics effects in Show
  • Improved printing capabilities and increased calculation speed for Calc documents
  • Customizable clipart library
  • Support for the Microsoft PowerPoint (.pot) template file format
  • Direct access to Web pages via hyperlinks in Write documents
  • Improved .Zip compatibility and Table functionality for Write documents
  • Spelling Support and Improved Page Setup capabilities for Show documents
The beta version of ThinkFree Office 2.0 is now available to users with an active subscription to ThinkFree Office, which costs $49.95 per user, per year. Users with an active subscription are always entitled to download and use the latest version of the software on any operating system, including Linux, Windows, and Macintosh, from any computer. ThinkFree plans to introduce the complete version of ThinkFree Office 2.0 in the first quarter, 2002.
