| SLAX LiveCD fixes bugs, enhances features |
May 25, 2006
SLAX LiveCD, based on Slackware Linux and formerly called Slackware LiveCD, was updated to version 5.1.5 on May 20. SLAX LiveCD is based on the latest KDE desktop and a 2.6.16 Linux kernel. Like most live CDs, it runs directly from CD-ROM without requiring installation onto the user's hard drive.
"I'm happy to let you know that a new SLAX release is ready," distro creator/maintainer Tomas Matejicek wrote in the release announcement. "This time you can use some cool new features. Added 'noload' cheatcode to disable loading of any specified modules. This affects all modules on the SLAX CD, including /base and /modules, so using 'noload=*kde*' will disable loading of all modules with 'KDE' in the name."
"It's useful with copy2ram cheatcode, because any unused module is not copied to RAM," the Czech-Republic based Matejicek added. "I also added 'ram-size' cheatcode to specify maximum memory for SLAX to store changes, downloaded files, etc."
Other improvements in SLAX v5.1.5, according to the project team, include:- Added make_disk.sh script to SLAX CD, to create bootable SLAX disk (eg. install SLAX to USB device)
- Added different size of boot (splash) image to be more compatible with other screen resolutions, tested with 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024.
- Fixed start dhcpcd at background (to prevent annoying messages at login prompt)
- Unmuted VIDEO and CD sound chanels (set volume to 77%)
- Set kPlayer to use arts
- Fixed popcorn missing libraries
Key features in the SLAX package include:- KOffice 1.5.0 (office suite)
- Mplayer 1.0pre7 (audio player)
- Sendmail 8.13.1 (email client)
