Linspire's latest desktop Linux operating system has arrived on the shelves of more than 1,000 retailers in the US, according to an announcement from the company. Shoppers at Best Buy, CompUSA, Fry's Electronics, Micro Center, J & R Computer World can now acquire a copy of the Linspire Five-0 Linux desktop "for only about $60" while they replenish their printing supplies or make other electronics purchases.
"The availability of Linspire in so many major retail outlets shows the public awareness and demand for Linux on the desktop," commented Linspire CEO Michael Robertson. "With Linspire Five-0, we've finally hit the quality threshold required for mainstream users," Robertson said.
"Our goal is to see Linux software, PCs and laptops prominently displayed in every major computer store," added Robertson.
The Linspire "Five-0" desktop Linux distribution was released by the company last month. Included with the new version are the latest versions of several well-known open-source applications, including the OpenOffice productivity suite, Lsongs Music Manager and Lphoto Photo Manager, RealPlayer 10, and Lassist Suite, and a contact and email manager. In addition, the latest Linspire disribution comes with expanded support for popular file formats, including .mp3, .doc, and .pdf, among others.
The company has also released a free LiveCD version of Linspire Five-0, which is available for download via BitTorrent.
