| Lightweight KateOS Linux turns 3.0 |
Aug. 18, 2006
The KateOS project, which maintains a relatively new Linux distribution, announced the release of its v3.0 on Aug. 17. The Poland-based distro features a 2.6.17.6 kernel, the XFce desktop as default, and a good selection of applications to go with them.
"After seven months of hard work, KateOS 3.0 is now ready ... this version starts a new series which will be supported for at least a year," the project team said in the release announcement.
The project, originally known as Kate Linux, was founded about three years ago, near the end of 2003, the team said. The first KateOS-branded version came out last Dec. 7, according to DistroWatch. IT is an independently developed, lightweight distribution with some of concepts derived from Slackware Linux.
Key features of this release, according to the team, include:- OpenOffice.org 2.0.3
- choice of SendMail 8.13.7 or Thunderbird 1.5.0.5 email clients
- MPlayer 1.0pre8
- GIMP 2.2.12
- emacs text editor 21.4
