| New Xandros subscription service launches |
Jun. 10, 2004
Xandros has announced a membership program that is intended to give users access to software updates and the latest version of software at all times, via a subscription. The new service, called Xandros Networks, is a move by the company to introduce a new business model and develop a community around the company's Desktop Linux operating system.
Yesterday Xandros released a freely available download version of its Linux desktop. Called Xandros Open Circulation edition, the distribution is available at no cost for non-commercial use.
Debian-based Xandros offers a single-click update service in two versions -- a basic service that offers fixes and software patches, and a premium service that extends member access to the very latest software released from Xandros's quality assurance team. The latter service gives users software with all the latest features and enhancements, and provides discounts on future Xandros software and third-party products or services.
Current registered users of the Xandros Desktop Operating System (OS) are automatically eligible for the service at the basic membership level.
Dr. Frederick H. Berenstein, Xandros Chairman and CTO explained the move in a statement, commenting that "Xandros Networks will strengthen our core community and provide a more continuous revenue stream."
Formerly Corel Linux, Xandros emerged in August 2002 with a focus on releasing Linux desktop software "that corporations won't have difficulty introducing into their environment." The company has introduced a version for the enterprise and has won several awards .
Members can also participate in development decisions. Xandros VP for software development Ming Poon said that the company's forum would allow premium members to dialogue with the company about future directions of development and vote on features development roadmap.
An introductory annual premium service subscription fee of US $39 is now being offered to Premium Members. More details about the program are available here.
