| Bitstream signs font deal with Linspire |
Aug. 17, 2004
Linspire will resell Bitstream's fonts as part of the Linux desktop maker's one-click online service, according to an announcement out today. Bitstream's "Breaking the Norm" typeface library -- with typeface titles that include Dear Diary, Ghoul Crazy, Howdy Pardner, Kid Stuff, Bali Beat, The Rat Pack, and other novelty themes -- is now available to Linspire customers.
In 2003, Linspire (then called Lindows) licensed Bitstream's delta-hinted fonts for Linux. Delta hinting involves fine tuning fonts so that they are optimized for online viewing even at small point sizes on low resolution devices.
Bitstream, the first independent digital foundry, teamed up with Gnome last year to make its Vera fonts available to the open source community and Linux users under a copyright license that allows derivative works.
