Oct. 04, 2006
Microsoft's Internet Explorer still holds a commanding lead in the overall browser usage market, but Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox continues to gain share slowly and steadily, and now accounts for 12.5 percent of global browser use, according to a web metrics researcher.
Firefox has posted half a percentage point or more gain in usage share for the third consecutive month, California-based Net Applications said today.
Firefox's 12.5 percent global browser usage share in September represents a .7 increase from August's numbers, which in turn were up from 11.3 percent in July, Net Applications reported. Internet Explorer's share, meanwhile, slipped to 82.1 percent in September, down from 83 percent in August.
IE owned more than 93 percent of the total browser market a year ago.
Apple's Safari browser also has made slight progress. In September, Safari's share increased from 3.2 percent to 3.5 percent.
