| SUSE Linux wins LinuxWorld "Best of Show" |
Aug. 17, 2006
Novell had a memorable day Aug. 17 at the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. Its SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) 10 was a double award winner, being named both "Best of Show" and "Best Desktop Solution," and its AppArmor product earned "Best Security Solution" honors.
These awards follow the "Best of Show" award won by the Novell-sponsored openSUSE project at April's Boston LinuxWorld.
"We poured years of innovation into this product and the industry is taking note," enthused Nat Friedman, Novell's vice president of desktop engineering. "The creativity and hard work of our engineering team at Novell and our friends in the community have created a desktop that combines cool features with business sensibilities."
Noteworthy new features in SLED 10 include integrated search, a more seamless plug-and-play capability, accelerated 3D graphics and desktop effects, and the Novell edition of OpenOffice.org 2.0, according to Novell.
SLED is targeted by Novell at basic office workers and is well suited for complete desktop replacements, retail point of service solutions, thin-client deployments, and engineering workstations.
Novell AppArmor is an application-level security service that protects customer systems and processes, Novell said.
The award winners signify distinguished product and service innovations at LinuxWorld and are selected by Linux Journal, LinuxWorld said.
