| Linux Trojan Horse 'JBellz' gets security fix |
Jan. 15, 2003
Discovered and fixed on the same day, a Linux Trojan Horse has been reported.
Symantec's security alert of Linux systems . . .
Trojan.Linux.JBellz arrives as a malformed .mp3 file. When the .mp3 file is played with a specific version of the mpg123 player under Linux, the code of the Trojan horse is executed, thereby deleting all the files in the home directory of the current user.
According to the alert, Suse 8.0 and Slackware 8.0 are known to be vulnerable, though the alert states that the "Trojan may affect other Linux systems, and modifying the Trojan is easy enough to support other Linux distributions, or other platforms." Read Symantic advisory
