| Pittsburgh hosts open source summit |

Google evangelist Chris DiBona and venture capitalist and former Oracle president/COO Ray Lane will be among the headliners at an Open Source Summit Feb. 15 in Pittsburgh, Penna. The summit will discuss "how the open source movement is changing the rules of the game for everyone in the software marketplace," an event spokesperson said.
This forum -- designed especially for senior business and IT executives, independent software vendors, and IT consultants -- also will explore the strategies and economics of open source software, the spokesperson said.
Lane is general partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in Menlo Park, Calif., focused on helping entrepreneurs with technological and market insight, organizational development, team building, selling, and managing growth. During his eight-year tenure, Oracle exhibited sales growth from approximately $1 billion in 1992 to its current annual revenue of $10 billion.
Four industry experts will lead a discussion on key open source topics:- Dibona of Google will address how Google has leveraged open source
- Dr. Tom Jones of Tolven Inc. will discuss open source initiatives in healthcare
- John Soat of Information Week will talk about open source trends and adoption
- Susan P. Altman of K&L Gates will address licensing and legalities of open source
- Jean-Sebastien Delfino of IBM will will give an overview of SCA and the Apache Tuscany project
Other topics will include Microsoft vs. open-source software, the open source development model, support for open-source products, and legal issues including GPL, LGPL, and Copy Left licensing.
Jean-Sebastien Delfino, a senior technical staff member at the IBM Burlingame Lab, also will address the summit. Currently Delfino is working on the Service Component Architecture and the Apache Tuscany project.
Ravi Koka, Founder and CTO of SEEC Inc., will serve as moderator.
