| Running Google Earth on SUSE Linux |
Apr. 06, 2006
Google Earth, which puts satellite imagery and other geographic information on Windows desktops, hasn't been available for Linux desktops -- until now. A new tutorial explains how to install and run it using free software (VMware Player, SUSE Linux 10, the VMWorkstation evaluation version) and a Windows XP installer CD.
According to the tutorial at Linux-Tip.net, VMware Player enables users to evaluate new or pre-release software contained in virtual machines, without any installation or configuration hassles. It runs any virtual machine created by VMware Workstation, GSX Server, or ESX Server. VMware Workstation is desktop virtualization software that runs multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single PC.
The tutorial uses VMWorkstation to create a Windows XP virtual machine. "We'll later run Google Earth with the free VMware Player," the article says. "Except for the Windows software you will be able to run GoogleEarth free of charge on a Linux machine."
