| OpenSUSE team releases two betas in four days |
Feb. 25, 2006
Development in the SUSE Linux camp continues to move along at warp speed. The Novell-sponsored OpenSUSE project released its second beta in four days on Friday with OpenSUSE 10.1 Beta 5. The purpose of this release is to smooth out many of the rough edges of Monday's Beta 4 release, the project said.
OpenSUSE v10.1 Beta 5, like the four previous versions, is made up of 5 CD .iso images for i386 and x86-64 architectures.
Most of Beta4's rough edges have been smoothed, but this beta is still not production ready, the team said on the OpenSUSE website. Some of the issues that have not been fixed include some problems with the CD installer, a partitioner that is broken in some cases, a package manager that isn't well integrated, the fact that there is no way to add a new installation source, and upgrades from previous installations that may fail.
Be sure to read the Most Annoying Bugs page before downloading this release, the project said. Workarounds for some of the bugs are included.
The date for a final version of OpenSUSE 10.1 has not been determined, but it is expected sometime within the next several weeks. You can download your copies of the Beta 5 .isos here.
