| France to collaborate with China on Linux |

The French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) plans to develop Linux-based software in cooperation with the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). The Chinese Open Platform Initiative is the result of joint government plans to cooperate on the development of a Linux platform for PCs, servers, and PDAs.
The program, which will support online services and communication applications, also involves French IT technology company Bull and European semiconductor company STMicroelectronics.
CEA signed an agreement for the initiative with Xu Guanhua, the Chinese minister of science and technology, with French President Jacques Chirac and Chinese President Hu Jintao in attendance.
Both China and France have recently been involved in Linux-related initiatives, and have pledged national resources to help the adoption of open source in the public sector.
In April, the China Linux Standards Group was launched by the Chinese government with approval from China's Ministry of Information Industry, to promote Linux in that country. The group is responsible for developing and defining essential standards for Linux-related architectures, and is expected to significantly shape the emerging Linux market in China. China's Red Flag Software and Japan's Miracle Linux set up a joint team in January to develop Asianux, a Linux server operating environment which will provide common kernel, library, and packages for server operating systems for the Asian market.
Last month, the French Ministry of Defense contracted with Paris-based Mandrakesoft and a consortium of French-based technology firms on a three-year contract to improve Linux security. The project expects to gain Common Criteria certification of Linux to meet Evaluation Assurance Level 5 (EAL5), and Mandrake says it will release the work under an open source license.
Brazil, Russia, India, Japan, Taiwan, the US, and many other countries have launched programs to foster the development of open source Linux.
