| Migration tool adds "full" MS Office-to-OO.o support |
Aug. 08, 2006
Desktop migration specialist Versora on Aug. 8 released an updated version (v2.0) of its Progression Desktop Windows to Linux desktop migration software, a tool that helps users to transfer files and settings from their Windows system to a Linux system.
The most significant new features in the update, according to the company, are the addition of "full support" for Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) to OpenOffice 2.0 migration; enhanced system setting migration functionality; increased file security; and file spanning that enables virtually unlimited data transfers, the company said.
Sporting a "click-next-next-finished"-style wizard to guide the user, Progression Desktop migrates data, system settings, and application settings from Windows desktops to Linux distributions that include SLED 10, Ubuntu, Xandros, Linspire, Fedora, Mandriva, Red Hat Desktop, SUSE, and MEPIS, a Versora spokesman said.
In June, Xandros became the first distribution to integrate Progression Desktop into the Premium Home edition of its system, the spokesman said.
The new Progression Desktop also includes "full support" for localization in "any" language, fulfilling international partner requests for a Windows-to-Linux migration solution in their native languages, according to the company.
Once the Versora software is installed on Windows, it walks the user through simple steps to create a platform-neutral migration file, the company says. Thereafter, after the Versora software is loaded on the Linux distribution and the migration file is saved, the files and settings are automatically integrated into the corresponding programs, which are selected by the user, the company adds.
