First SimplyMepis 6.0 beta arrives
Apr. 27, 2006

Mepis LLC on April 27 announced the Beta 1 release of SimplyMepis 6.0, the first of two planned betas before the final version is to launch around June 1. Beta 2 will be out May 3, according to Mepis founder and chief maintainer Warren Woodford.

Beta 1 includes many package updates. "Thanks to the hard work of Jonathan Riddell and the Kubuntu team, the latest Ubuntu Dapper updates to KDE and Cups greatly improve print support. Yeah, team!" said Woodford.

Beta1 provides a 2.6.15.6 kernel based on Ubuntu kernel version 2.6.15-21.32. Mepis kernels are source-identical with Ubuntu kernels, but the configurations are tweaked to accommodate Mepis specific requirements, Woodford added.

SimplyMEPIS strives to provide complete multimedia support out-of-the-box. Based on user feedback, xawtv has been replaced by tvtime, and browser plug-in links for Macromedia Flash and Sun Java have been repaired and improved, Woodford said.

Media notification popups have been limited to pluggable media in an effort to improve cooporation between udev and kde. Mepis packages have been tweaked to better handle updates and to enforce specific Mepis configuration requirements, Woodford added.

Beta 1 was synchronized with the Ubuntu Dapper pools around 7PM on April 26. The Mepis pools have been updated to include the latest version of the transitional Mepis OS Center and other Mepis provided packages. Starting with Beta 1, Woodford said, he hopes that users will be able to maintain and update 6.0 incrementally from packages in the Mepis and Dapper pools.

The ISO image is available for download and testing in the Mepis 'testing' subdirectory at the Mepis Subscriber's Site and public mirrors. Users are requested to send feedback to dev@mepis.org

The 6.0-beta 1 bootable/installable CD includes more than 900 packages and features OpenOffice 2.0.2, Firefox 1.5.0.1, Thunderbird 1.5, Amarok 1.3.9, and JBidWatcher 1.0. Over 15,000 additional packages are available for installation from the Mepis and Ubuntu package pools.
