| SoftMaker Office 2006 boasts high MS Office compatibility |
Dec. 28, 2006
German software vendor SoftMaker last week released SoftMaker Office 2006 for Linux and FreeBSD, an alternative office suite to OpenOffice.org, KOffice, and GNOME Office. SoftMaker Office 2006 is claimed to read and write all Microsoft Word and Excel files with a high level of compatibility.
Included in SoftMaker Office 2006 are the latest versions of TextMaker and PlanMaker, two popular stand-alone applications, now combined into an integrated package, a spokesperson said.
Acording to the company, the problem with free office suite software is that it is often either slow and cumbersome to use, or does not match the feature set of market leader Microsoft Office. SoftMaker Office 2006, on the other hand, loads and executes quickly, eliminating the delays associated with other office applications, the company claims.
Pricing and availability
SoftMaker Office 2006 for Linux and for FreeBSD -- the package contains executables for both operating systems bundled together -- is priced at $69.95. A free 30-day trial version (23 MB) can be downloaded here.
