Mandriva -- the company resulting from the merger of France-based Mandrake and Brazil-based Connectiva -- announced the release of Mandriva Linux Limited Edition 2005 last week, the promised transitional release between 10.1 Official and the upcoming 2006 Official (to be released later this year).
Limited Edition (LE) 2005 was built to optimize performance, according to the company. It supports both x86-64 and dual-core technology, making it well suited to Linux users who want cutting edge features "without sacrificing stability and performance," Mandriva says.
The company lists the following key features of Mandriva LE 2005: - Linux kernel 2.6.11.6
- KDE 3.3.2 (with some backports from version 3.4, including kpdf)
- GNOME 2.8.3
- Firefox 1.0.2
- GCC 3.4.3
- The GIMP 2.2
- Cdrecord2.01.01a21 (with DVD+R dual-layer support)
- OpenOffice.org 1.1.4
- MySQL 4.1.11
Mandriva LE 2005 also boasts support for removable devices like digital cameras, Adaptec Host RAID controllers, flat screen monitors, and even the Xbox gaming console.
Mandriva LE 2005 is available via BitTorrent or HTTP download to Mandriva Club Members (a perk for membership dues) and Mandriva's contributors. The general public can pre-order Mandriva Limited Edition 2005 as a DVD for $65 USD. Mandriva says it will release a free download version in the future.
