Oct. 04, 2004
Japan's top Desktop Linux vendor TurboLinux has announced the availablity of its server offering based on kernel version 2.6.8. This latest release offers updated security features and targets small-to-medium businesses, governments, and academic institutions.
Turbolinux 10 Server (10S) is described by the Tokyo-based company as a comprehensive and cost-effective server environment. The release provides integrated database management systems (DBMS) and multi-use application server solutions, and includes a default version of NPTL for DBMS, Java, and other business software.
The release offers a variety of security options, including the company's proprietary TurboTools package that provides visual security options and updates, Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux), and a trial version of Trend Micro's ServerProtect for Linux antivirus software that the company says enables real-time virus monitoring.
Turbolinux 10S is said to support the Intel i915/925 chipset, Serial ATA, PCI Express, Infiniband, and FibreChannel drivers. Maintenance, including software updates, is provided free of charge for all Turbolinux 10S products for five years, the company says.
The Japanese market can purchase Turbolinux 10 Server beginning at the end of October. The software sells for US $360.00, which includes 90-day unlimited installation email support. A developer edition of the software goes for US $89.00. The product will ship worldwide in early December.
Turbolinux released a new desktop version for home consumers with advanced support for multimedia and devices in June. TurboLinux 10F, which adds the Turbo Media Player, is a TurboLinux product that works with xine, a widely-used Linux media engine, to play streaming video in Windows Media format, according to the company.
Market research firm BCN says that Turbolinux 10 Desktop was ranked as one of the top 10 best-selling system software packages in Japan in the first quarter of 2004, in a survey that included proprietary vendors such as Microsoft and Apple.
In March, Turbolinux announced an agreement with HP to distribute its Linux desktop on business HP PCs in twelve Asian markets.
