| Hancom Office to be pre-installed on Toshiba laptop |
May 01, 2002
Seoul, Korea -- (press release excerpt) -- Hancom Linux today announced that it's flagship product, Hancom Office, will be pre-installed by Toshiba Digital Media Engineering on the DynaBook SS S4/275, a popular new laptop computer aimed primarily at Japanese college students. Hancom Office is also available as an option for Toshiba's Libretto L3 and DynaBook SS M3 laptop computers. Today's announcement is another boost for Linux desktop adoption in Asia and elsewhere.
The size of a B5 sheet of paper (just 28.9cm by 22.9cm and 1.5cm thick), the DynaBook SS S4/275 is one of the smallest laptops on the market. The product was announced earlier this year but did not previously come with Caldera's OpenLinux operating system or Hancom Office pre-installed. Because of its innovative design, small size, and as one of a very small number of laptops that come with Linux pre-installed, the DynaBook SS S4/275 is sure to be popular with Japanese university students.
Hancom Linux will provide Toshiba with the latest Japanese version of its productivity suite, Hancom Office 2.0J, a full-featured, powerful productivity suite for Linux that is compatible with Microsoft Office. Hancom Office is already the leading office productivity suite in Asia, and is rapidly gaining acceptance in other parts of the world. Earlier this week, for example, Hancom Linux announced the availability of Hancom Deluxe 2.0AR, the first fully localized Arabic language Linux operating system, which includes the Arabic edition of Hancom Office.
The new DynaBook SS S4/275 will go on sale in Japan on May 13. In addition to Hancom Office 2.0J, it includes both the Windows XP operating system and Caldera OpenLinux Workstation version 3.1.1.
Toshiba's Libretto L3 and DynaBook SS M3 notebook computers also come with Linux preinstalled.
