Desktop Linux Summit adds Red Hat, Novell
Feb. 02, 2006

Red Hat Inc. has for the first time signed on as a platinum sponsor of the Desktop Linux Summit, to be held April 24 and 25 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in downtown San Diego, Calif., event host Linspire Inc. announced Thursday. Novell Inc. will again be a platinum sponsor of the show, which bills itself as the only event to focus exclusively on Linux and open source software for the desktop.

In addition to Linux stalwarts such as Novell, Red Hat, HP, Linspire, and Trolltech, companies such as Via Technologies, Revelation Software, desktop migration agent provider Alacos, and FarStone, which specializes in optimizing system recovery and performance, will also be represented in the exhibit hall, Linspire said.

Key speakers at the summit will include longtime Linux journalist Doc Searls, Novell Linux Desktop Engineering VP Nat Friedman, analyst Rob Enderle, OSDL principal analyst Dave Rosenberg, Debian Linux co-founder Ian Murdock, and Linspire and Mp3.com founder Michael Robertson, among others. A list of speakers and an agenda are available here.

Attendees will also hear from a lineup of Linux experts who will discuss case studies and best practices on topics such as emerging markets, migration, Linux for SMBs, desktop Linux in educational markets, and open source for corporate desktops.

New this year to the Summit is the Tux Squad Linux Install Fest, an event where all attendees can have a Linux distribution installed on their computer during the show, Linspire spokeswoman Heather MacKenzie said. Volunteer experts from Linux User Groups and sponsor companies will be on hand to answer attendee questions about Linux and help them install the operating system. More information about the Linux Install Fest is available here.

The Desktop Linux Summit is one of the less-pricey IT conferences around, at a cost of $75 for the two-day ticket, which includes admission to all exhibits and speakers, and a T-shirt. A $20 ticket for the exhibits only on both days is also being offered. One-day tickets are not available, the company said.

You can register for the event here.
