Novell has joined the China Linux Standards Group to promote Linux in China. According to an announcement today, Novell China will contribute to the group's Linux standardization initiatives as the first "global commercial Linux vendor" to formally join the initiative.
Dr. Zhang Hongfen, head of the China Linux Standard Group, said, "Novell's membership will contribute significantly to the definition of Chinese Linux standards. Novell has been extensively involved in the definition of international software standards, with abundant experience in this field and a good relationship with global technology communities. This will help our group stay informed on the latest Linux trends in a timely and effective manner."
Last April the China Linux Standards Group was launched by the Chinese government with approval from China's Ministry of Information Industry, to promote Linux in that country. The group is responsible for developing and defining essential standards for Linux-related architectures and is expected to significantly shape the emerging Linux market in China.
Novell says it will provide Linux consulting and guidance to Chinese IT scholars and experts.
Linux has garnered momentum in Asia largely due to strong government support. Oracle, AMD, Dell, HP, Langchao, NEC, and Sun, have all said they will certify their products and support the adoption of Asianux as a Linux standard in Asia.
Asianux was developed through a joint partnership between China's Red Flag Software and Japan's Miracle Linux at Oracle's China Development Center in Beijing. Staffed with Linux experts from Oracle as well as local and multinational partners, Asianux was developed at Oracle's Development Lab in Beijing with the assistance of top Asian Linux vendors Red Flag and Miracle Linux.
