openSUSE 10.3 Alpha 6 available
Jul. 25, 2007

The openSUSE team on July 20 released version 10.3 Alpha 6. In addition to extensive upgrades, this is the first alpha containing the new refactored libzypp software management library, with some "rough edges," says the team. Targets include x86, x86-64 and PowerPC.

It's been about six weeks since the openSUSE team released Alpha 5, featuring kernel version 2.6.22.rc4 and a choice between GNOME and KDE desktops. Novell is shooting for completion of v10.3 for general release in October, the team stated.

Key changes in the release Alpha 6 are said to include:
  • Linux 2.6.22
  • libzypp 3.11.8
  • gcc 4.2
  • Continued splitting of packages to reduce size
  • Single CD installation media, with improved GNOME and KDE
  • Introduction of x86_64 CDs for both KDE and GNOME
Regarding libzypp, the team said: "The goal was to deliver a working version for this alpha, so expect rough edges, unusual slowdown and behavior, for example YaST integration is really alpha quality."

Standard features in OpenSUSE 10.3 include:
  • Evolution 2.10 email client
  • OpenOffice.org 2.1 office suite
  • SeaMonkey 1.0.99 web application suite
  • GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
  • Abiword 2.4.5 text editor
  • Pidgin (formerly GAIM) 1.5 instant messaging client
OpenSUSE is a community project sponsored by Novell. The openSUSE project's main goals are to make openSUSE the most widely used Linux distribution in the world; leverage open source collaboration to make openSUSE the world's most usable Linux distribution and desktop environment for new and experienced Linux users; and make its commercial big-brother SLED (SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop) the Linux desktop of choice for businesses.

The Alpha 6 release can be downloaded from the OpenSUSE project's "development version" download page, here.

As always with alpha releases, these are test versions designed with encouragement to users to report bugs. In this case, those reports can be submitted to the project's bugzilla site, here.
